In Ukraine, work continues to ensure an effective soil protection system. The result of the coordination of the efforts of the state, science, business, public and international organizations was the establishment of the Ukrainian Soil Partnership.
This was stated by Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Volodymyr Topchiy during the international workshop "Ukrainian collaboration to promote Sustainable Soil Management (SSM) within the framework of the National Soil Partnership", which took place within the FAO project “Integrated Natural Resources Management in Degraded Landscapes in the Forest-Steppe and Steppe Zones of Ukraine” on May 23.
"There are about 800 types of soils in Ukraine. In addition, more than 60% of the country's land fund is unique chernozem soils. And, of course, the urgent issue is the preservation of soil cover, its environmental and safe use. The creation of the Ukrainian Soil Partnership, which mission is aimed at finding ways for effective soil resource management, is another stage in the state system of protection and reproduction of soil fertility, " said Volodymyr Topchiy.
According to the Deputy Minister, due to the high potential of soil resources, Ukraine plays a strategic role in the world food market and in ensuring global food security. Therefore, an important task of the Ukrainian Soil Partnership (UaSP) with Ukraine's growing participation in global food security is to preserve other important ecosystem and other soil functions, as well as to maintenance of soil degradation neutrality.
In addition, the UaSP is considered as a mean to deepen Ukraine's cooperation with the Global Soil Partnership, which Ukraine joined in 2014, as well as with the regional European Soil Partnership and the subregional Eurasian Soil Partnership.
During the workshop, such topics as achieving land degradation neutrality, promoting sustainable soil management through the Global Soil Partnership, Ukrainian experience in soil management in a global context, satellite monitoring of land in agriculture in Ukraine were discussed.
